About Paul McMahon

Paul E. McMahon, Principal, PEM Systems (Binghamton, NY), helps large and small organizations as they move toward increased agility and higher performance. Paul's current focus is on coaching teams in practical techniques to help them solve their own challenges using the Essence framework (www.essence-in-use.com). He has taught Software Engineering at Binghamton University, State University of New York; conducted workshops on Engineering Process and Management, and published more than 50 articles on software and systems development and management, including several in CrossTalk, The Journal of Defense Software Engineering. Paul is the author of five books including Integrating CMMI and Agile Development: Case Studies and Proven Techniques for Faster Performance Improvement (August, 2010) and a book on collaborative development, Virtual Project Management: Software Solutions for Today and the Future (CRC Press, 2000), and is a co-author of the recent new book: The Essence of Software Engineering: Applying the SEMAT Kernel (2013).

A frequent speaker at industry conferences, including the Systems and Software Technology Conference, Paul has been consulting independently since 1997. His experience, insights, and recommendations he shares with his clients reflect 24 years of engineering and management experience working for such companies as Link Simulation and Lockheed Martin. Paul holds a BA degree, Magna Cum Laude, in mathematics from the University of Scranton, and an MA degree in mathematics from Binghamton University.

His current interests and work with clients focus on the use of the Essence framework to help solve today's current challenges (i.e. cybersecurity, privacy, ethical use of artificial intelligence). Paul provides online Essence certification and tailored workshop training for his clients. He is also currently on the leadership team of an international initiative to refound software engineering founded by Ivar Jacobson, Bertrand Meyer and Richard Soley (www.semat.org).

Paul is a Certified ScrumMaster, a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. Past and current clients include Raytheon, L3 Communications, BAE, AlionScience and Technology, Northrup-Grumman, and the U.S. Department of Defense.
